Thanks for any help any of you might be able to give to help me get this tuner stick working as it should. I know it's not typical/recommended to put two problems into one forum post. I have managed to get SMPlayer and MPlayer to also display the stream from the tuner (after figuring out to store the w_scan data. Heck, VLC worked when nothing else would. I'd like to get VLC working with the tuner again.

I tried reinstalling VLC, but that didn't help even a little. VLC was the ONLY program that was accessing (able to access?) the tuner. I've searched for some hidden setting file for VLC, but haven't been able to locate anything. I've tried recreating the xspf file, to no avail (it made no difference). Instead, whenever you try to select a channel, VLC just closes. Then, without warning, VLC stopped playing the stream from the tuner.

and I was able to watch all of the OTA channels that were being received by the KWorld USB TV Tuner through VLC. Problem 2: The -L command line switch tells w_scan to output the XML file in the xspf file format that VLC needs. Using a simple rabbit ear antenna hooked to the tuner, I've been able to find 20 OTA stations in my area. I have been able to use w_scan to successfully scan for OTA channels with the tuner, and even produce the XML file VLC needs. I ran tvtime-configuration from the command line, and changed video input source to /dev/dvb/adapter0 (TVTime said this was a directory) and then tried just /dvb/adapter0 (TVTime said it could not open that capture device). I didn't see an ATSC option for the broadcast protocol), but TVTime did report that it couldn't find a /dev/video0 device. I don't know if the recent troubles with TVTime that have been reported in the forum are partly responsible (just curious, but is TVTime not working with ATSC broadcasts, and only NTSC broadcasts?. I also tried to view from the tuner in TVTime. But when it comes to these types of things, I a) can't wrap my head around it, and b) just have no idea of exactly what to do. I suspect (possibly wrongly, I might add) that this is what needs to be done. However, when it comes to modprobing modules and knowing what goes where, I'm rather lost. I suspect that if I can get my system to recognize the tuner as a v4l2 device, instead of recognizing it as a webcam, that I'd have a LOT less trouble getting this thing set up. I don't see mention of v4l2 or the em28xx device in either of the modprobe files (should there be?). # this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY # a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored. # to be loaded at boot time, one per line. # This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are Snd 36398 20 snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_rawmidi,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_ossįirewire_core 37387 2 firewire_ohci,firewire_sbp2Ĭode: # /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time. Here's the information that PCC > Browse & Configure Hardware tool is giving me: BUT, this computer doesn't even have a webcam.

Problem 1: PCC recognizes the tuner as a webcam, instead of a V4L2 device! I was able to find some firmware files for this tuner on the openelec git repository, and I was able to install the firmware files (previously missing) in /lib/firmware. Both the laptop and the HTPC are fully updated, and both are running the Xfce desktop (so KDE-only solutions aren't going to be much help). I originally bought this for my HTPC (as described in the magazine a couple of months ago), but an trialing it on my laptop. I was really hoping that this would be (more or less) plug and play. But getting it to work appears to be for the not so faint of heart. I got it primarily because of the good reports on Newegg of this particular USB TV Tuner stick working with Kodi, and Linux in general. I just purchased a KWorld UB435-Q USB TV Tuner stick.
